On November 27, 2012 the Innovative Techniques for the Environment Award, organized in the framework of Pollutec 2012 in partnership with ADEME, has been granted to Papel, the Li-ion paper battery developed by researchers from the LGP2.

Papel has been developed by researchers from the LGP2 – Lara Jabbour who defended her thesis in October, Davide Beneventi, CNRS Researcher and Didier Chaussy, Professor at Grenoble INP-Pagora - in collaboration with Claudio Gerbaldi, Lecturer at the Politecnico di Torino (Italy).

"Presently, the Li-ion batteries have a high energy density, longer life cycle and provide additional safety," say the inventors. "But for use in large-scale products, it is necessary to reduce production costs and minimize environmental impact".

This is the innovation of Papel based on the use of a method for producing electrodes from high production paper industry capacity.

On this new Li-ion battery, the polymer electrodes are replaced by paper electrodes, the solvent is removed and the toxic fluorinated binder structuring the active materials is replaced by a binder of cellulose micro-fibrils. Through a filtration process in aqueous medium, the fibers are deconstructed at the nanoscale, forming a 3D network that guarantees both mechanical resistance and a good contact between the conductive particles. These electrodes disintegrate rapidly in water, allowing full recycling of active materials.

Flexible, ecological and economical, the Papel battery meets the requirements of production in the following application areas: mobile phones, aerospace, automotive (electric vehicles) and renewable energy plants. This innovation is accompanied by Gravit - Innovation Grenoble Alpes, a technology transfer facilitator between research and industrial markets. A patent has been filed and a demonstrator is being designed.
