IV - 1 - Objective

A stable aqueous nanocomposite dispersion based on cellulose whiskers and a poly(styreneco-hexylacrylate) matrix was prepared via miniemulsion polymerization. Cellulose nanocrytals suspension was mixed with monomers phase in presence of anionic surfactant and a stabilizing additive acting as a hydrophobe. After sonication for a short time to obtain a stable emulsion of small droplet (60-100 nm), polymerisation reaction was trigged by the addition of the initiator.

The nanocomposite dispersion was characterized using light scattering and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Films obtained by water evaporation and particle coalescence were investigated using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that the final nanocrystals composite is stable for months.
